Department of Commerce

It is the maxim of every prudent master of a family, never to attempt to make at home what it will cost him more to make than to buy…What is prudence in the conduct of every private family, can scarce be folly in that of a great kingdom. (The Wealth Of Nations, Book IV Chapter II, pp. 456-7, para. 11-12).

What is Commerce?

Commerce refers to the well-organized set up of large-scale interchange of products, services or something of value, for money or money’s worth, among the economic agents. It covers all the activities which directly or indirectly assist in the process of exchange.

Basically, it is concerned with the distribution aspect of the business. It relies on the fact that everything that is produced, must be consumed. In this way, ‘commerce’ comes into the picture, to facilitate effective and uninterrupted buying and selling of goods and services.

Why Study Commerce?

Students who wish to take up the commerce stream should keep in mind that this subject is not an easy alternative compared to science. Both science and commerce are complex study areas in their own ways and cannot be compared. Hence, if a student wishes to pursue the Commerce stream only because they feel that science is not a suitable stream for them, they need to rethink their choice. The Commerce stream should be pursued by students who have an aptitude as well as an avid interest in it.

The main factor in Commerce is the diversity that this subject offers to the students, and attracts them to pursue higher education in this stream. If the students are excellent with numbers and good at examining and dealing with big numbers and data and have a basic sense of Economics and Finance, then the Commerce stream is the ideal choice.

While choosing Commerce students have to make themselves familiar with subjects like Accountancy, Finance, Business Studies, Economics, etc. In today’s scenario, Commerce has become the most favorable career choice in India. Students should start taking the Commerce subject seriously and choose the subject after Class 10th.
